The Art of Imperfection: Why Film-Inspired Photography Still Matters

Lately, I’ve been thinking about how much our society values technology always improving—crisp, clear, ultra-high resolution—and how refreshing it can be to step in the opposite direction. It might seem counterintuitive to purposely choose a lens that introduces grain, blur, and soft vignetting into your photos. But this summer, I did just that—and rediscovered a creative spark I didn’t know I needed.

The Lens: A Tiny Throwback with Big Charm

While scrolling Instagram one day, I came across something unexpected: a refurbished lens made from the inside of a disposable film camera, now adapted to fit modern mirrorless systems. Naturally, I was intrigued. The RetroPia Disposable Camera Lens is super compact and full of character. It offers no autofocus, limited sharpness, and a dreamy, unpredictable finish that feels like a creative rebellion against digital perfection.

As someone who’s carried a real film camera on past travels, I loved the thrill of waiting to see developed photos. The magic of the unknown. But let’s be real: film is expensive to shoot and even pricier to develop. This little lens offered a workaround—the vintage aesthetic I love, with the freedom to shoot endlessly and still be able to edit freely.

Where I Took It: Summer Adventures

I brought the lens along on two trips this July: a family hiking trip in Washington and my first-ever visit to New York City for a girls’ weekend. In Washington, we explored beaches along the Pacific coast, mostly unplugged from service, soaking in the wild, misty quiet of the outdoors. In NYC, it was the opposite—fast-paced, packed with energy, and overflowing with inspiration around every corner.

Both trips were entirely different, but the lens brought the same result: images that felt honest. Imperfect. Textured. And surprisingly emotional. I’ll be sharing a few of my favorite shots in this post so you can see what I mean.
